Air Duct Cleaning: To Do Or Not To Do?
Air duct cleaning—a service offered by many HVAC companies. And most promise that yearly air duct cleaning will create cleaner air and a more efficient HVAC system. But the question is: is it really worth it or is it really nothing more than a scam?
Moment of truth, no evidence exists that actually proves how effective air duct cleaning is at improving the overall indoor air quality of your home. There’s also no evidence that it will reduce the amount of dust in your home—on it’s own. But with a maintenance plan that includes changing your air filters regularly, it can greatly improve the efficiency of your HVAC and help extend its lifespan.
Experts argue the need for air duct cleaning depends on a variety of factors, including pets, smoking, recent renovations, local weather conditions and overall home cleanliness. A good contractor will offer to do an inspection beforehand for a nominal charge, if any, to see if a cleaning is necessary.
When Should You Consider Air Duct Cleaning?
If you are smelling something musty or moldy from your system, you may want to have an HVAC technician come out and inspect your air ducts. Mold is formed because of trapped moisture. It can be extremely dangerous to you and your HVAC system.
It might be time to consider an air duct cleaning if your ductwork is collecting significant amounts of dust and debris.
Insect bodies or rodent dropping
If you are experiencing dead insects and/or rodent droppings in your air ducts, it is a good sign they need to be cleaned. Not only do these materials circulate in your home, it’s also a sign that insects or rodents might have nests in your home.
Remember, the easier it is for the air to flow through your air ducts, the better your system performs delivering that air to your living spaces. Any blockage that is in your air ducts will prevent the air to flow properly which will mean higher energy costs over time.
