Why Is It So Important To Change Air Filters In Your Home?

Change air filters

Did you know that clogged and dirty ac filters are one of the main causes of heating and cooling system problems?

Unfortunately, for many homeowners, it is so easy to forget the chore of changing the air filters.

Dust, pollen, pet dander, mold and other allergens quickly accumulate on the air filters and are recirculated throughout your home. When the filters remain unchanged, a clogged air filter can wreak havoc on your AC unit and your home’s air quality. There are several things that can happen when the air filter is clogged. Here are just a few:

  • The performance of your heating and cooling systems blower fan can have a huge impact on your energy consumption. In fact, a clogged filter can use 15% more energy. Clogged filters lead to insufficient heating and cooling because when the filters are clogged the blower has to strain to pass air through causing a reduction in your air flow.
  • Air conditioners need proper airflow to keep the cold coil warm. Without proper air flow, the evaporator coil can freeze because not enough air is moving past the coil to dissolve the condensation, causing it to freeze.
  • If the filter’s dirty, everything past the filter is dirty too, including the air you breathe. This pumps your home full of dust and allergens. A clogged air filter allows all that dust and debris that should be filtered out to be re-circulated back into your home.
  • A dirty air filter means your AC has to work much harder in order to cool your house, which means it takes more power to fuel it. A lot of money could be saved by simply changing the filter.

It is recommended you change your air filter once a month. Find a schedule that works best for you in order to remember. Some suggest changing them when you pay your power bill. Others use a calendar or even an app on their smartphone. Whatever works best for you in order to remember this “must do” chore.
